'Echo', 'Operator' and 'Slap'

 ECHO

before watching:

  • could be about the past or how past events effect the present→ could be about memories of people or places/the memories a place holds

After watching:
  • Open ended
  • the ECHO is Kaz reliving the moment she got the call about her dad being in an accident.
  • became a con artist using her dad's death as a ploy
  • Jump cuts used to display the emotion but also to jar us and make it feel put together- hints at the con
  • at the beginning there are lots of black and red outfits among the people walking past
  • Points of shift- when she tells the taxi to pull over- when she gets home- when her brother asks how the stranger knew about their dad- the final call
  • we are left to decide whether the final call is another con, whether its her brother in an accident, or whether it is the actual call she received when her dad was in the accident.
SLAP

before watching:
  • could be about gender identity or sexuality
  • may involve fighting or confrontation

after watching:.
  • Themes of sexuality and identity present in mise en scene throughout the whole film
  • broken mirrors reflect Connor's mental state
  • close ups show Connor's emotions and reactions
  • camera at eyeline with Connor- suspend our disbelief and lets us sympathise- aligns us with Connor's experience
  • film shows Connor as alone in many points- isolated- shown through cinematography

OPERATOR

before watching:
  • could involve someone working in the medical field- literal operator or surgeon
  • could be about an expert in their field
  • could involve machinery
  • could be about a call operator

after watching:
  • show the stress of acting as a 999 operator- emergency services
  • we are never shown the other side of the call- amplifies tension
  • we are made to feel the tension that she felt on the call
  • open ended- implies that's just one call of many in the day- after such a stressful 5 minutes we feel more grateful and understanding of 999 operators- understand more what it's like
  • mise en scene is greys and neutrals- keeps tension and focuses attention on the dialogue and tens atmosphere- doesn't need complex mise en scene
