SCREEN PLAY
SCENE 1
wave sound bridge from title to opening shot.
OPEN ON- EXT. DAY. BEACH
(long shot from left side of JAY- JAY on right of the scene while the friends are a bit further down the beach on the right of the scene)
JAY is sitting on a beach looking through her camera (phone?) she is not paying attention to her friends who are a few metres away discussing going into the water. It is a sunny day and there aren’t many people on the beach yet. JAY is sitting on a towel decorated with yellow fish. The friends are talking and sitting on a larger black picnic mat with a few bags around them. There are some towels overflowing from one of the bags and some toy tennis racquets are lying by them with a tennis ball on top. JAY is taking photos from different angles of the beach. The two friends stand up and one walks out of shot while the other friend, CHLOE, walks towards JAY.
CUT TO- EXT. DAY. BEACH
(long shot from behind JAY slightly looking over her shoulder so her camera is visible. JAY on the left side with room on the right side for another person to fit in the shot)
CHLOE walks into frame, we just see her legs walk in till she sits down and begins conversation with JAY.
CHLOE:
JAY, come and talk with us, I think we’re gonna head in the water.
JAY continues to look through her camera and takes a photo of the beach and the ocean, a single wooden pillar with a sign on can be seen in the photo.
JAY:
I can’t, Chlo. I have to get the perfect photos for my portfolio.
CUT TO- EXT. DAY. BEACH
(Mid shot from the right side of CHLOE so both CHLOE and JAY are visible with CHLOE closer to the camera)
CHLOE leans back and places her arms on the sand either side of her propping herself up and sighs.
CHLOE:
you’re so boring now with that camera in front of your face.
JAY finally puts her camera down on her lap and looks to CHLOE- hurt.
JAY:
hey- you know how important this scholarship is to me.
CHLOE:
I know- but… it wouldn’t kill you to actually spend time with us while we’re here.
JAY sighs and looks back to her camera.
CUT TO- EXT. DAY. BEACH
(Long shot of JAY and CHLOE from the front, behind them is a line of hedges that mark the end of the beach.)
JAY:
look, just till the deadline let me focus on my photos, I’ll hang out with you guys as much as possible after I promise.
CUT TO- EXT. DAY. BEACH
(Super long shot from in front of JAY and CHLOE- far enough that the picnic rug is visible in the frame)
CHLOE smiles and begins to stand up. the friend walks in with ice cream to the picnic rug. CHLOE signals to JAY to give her a pinky promise to which JAY responds. The friend shouts CHLOE and JAY over. CHLOE walks towards the friend who has gone to the picnic rug with the ice creams.
CUT TO- EXT. DAY. BEACH
(OTS from behind JAY we can see through her camera.)
JAY picks up her camera and is about to take another photo when suddenly CHLOE runs in front of the camera and bombs the photo holding two ice creams. JAY accidentally takes a photo.
CUT TO- EXT. DAY. BEACH
(Long shot from in front of JAY and CHLOE. The picnic rug is visible again)
JAY:
hey what are you-
CHLOE:
Don’t delete that one!
Alex hands JAY an ice cream and jogs back to the picnic rug. ALEX chats with the friend. JAY looks at the two for a short while. JAY goes to take more photos of the beach.
SCENE 2
CUT TO- INT. NIGHT. JAY’S ROOM
(Establishing shot of the whole room from the position of the door)
There is a large window in the far wall with a black blind pulled almost all the way down. Under the winder there is a desk with a laptop covered in various stickers on it. There are photos and drawings of various landscapes on the desk as well as a pencil and a rubber. By the desk on the floor to the left there is a pile of books on photography. To the right of the desk is an unmade bed with various plush animals and characters on it. There is a small shelf above the bed with framed pictures on it. The lights are off.
We hear footsteps from outside the room approaching the door.
CUT TO- INT. NIGHT. JAY’S ROOM
(Wide shot showing door of the room. Shot dollys across room as JAY moves.)
The door opens and JAY enters. She drops a small bag by the door of the room and walks in closing the door behind her with her foot. She turns the light on. She walks across the room and sits down at the desk placing her camera on the desk next to her. She opens her computer.
CUT TO- INT. NIGHT. JAY’S ROOM
(low angle mid shot from the desk to the left of JAY. Jay and her computer screen is visible)
JAY opens photoshop and opens up a photo of a tree next to a building. She begins to edit the photo playing around with the photo using layer styles and shifting the values of the photo. After a short while a phone begins to buzz.
CUT TO- INT. NIGHT. JAY’S ROOM
(OTS from behind JAY we see the phone to her left on the desk.)
The phone buzzes for a bit. The contact is CHLOE. JAY hesitates with her hand over the phone for a bit. JAY puts her hand back and lets to call ring through without picking up.
SCENE 3
CUT TO- EXT. DAY. PARK
(Establishing shot of the park with JAY walking around.)
There is a small playground to the left and a climbing frame in the distance. JAY is walking through the park with her camera. She stops every few metres to take a picture.
CUT TO- EXT. DAY. PARK
(Tracking shot as camera follows behind JAY at an eyeline match)
Jay continues to walk through the park. As JAY is taking a photo of a tree her phone rings. The phone screen switches from the camera to the call screen for CHLOE’s contact. JAY hesitates but picks up the phone. JAY holds the phone up to her ear.
(The camera moves round JAY to a mid-shot of the front of her.)
JAY:
CHLOE? What’s up?
CUT TO- INT. DAY. CHLOE’S ROOM.
(Establishing shot of the room with the camera at the wall on the bed.)
The room is small and clean. There is a bookshelf with drawers and a few posters and pictures around the room. CHLOE is going through drawers and placing items into s small bag. The turns her phone on speaker and chucks it onto her bed while she talks to JAY.
CHLOE:
Hey, I’m going to the beach with Anna, wanna come?
JAY:
(through the phone)
Isn’t it a bit cold for that now?
CHLOE:
Yeah a bit, we’re just going since it’s been a while.
CUT TO- EXT. DAY. PARK
(Long shot of JAY- camera slowly dollys in to a mid shot as take progresses)
JAY is sitting on a rusty roundabout with her phone held to her ear. She sways the roundabout back and forth as she talks.
JAY:
I’m not sure, CHLO, I’m out right now anyway.
CHLOE:
(Through the phone)
Where are you?
JAY:
Just at the park, I’m taking some photos
CHLOE:
(Through the phone)
I thought the deadline was last week. Why do you still need to take photos?
JAY:
It was, I just don’t think it’s enough.
CUT TO- EXT. DAY. COUNTRY ROAD
(Mid shot of the front of CHLOE- stays in place and pans to side of CHLOE as she walks- once at her side dollys to follow her as she walks.)
CHLOE walks down a country road with the bag she was filling earlier over her shoulder. She has her phone up to her ear.
CHLOE:
What do you mean ‘not enough’ you barely hung out with us for weeks!
JAY:
(Through the phone)
I know, I’m really sorry, okay? but I promise next time-
CHLOE:
Yes, I know its always next time- I’m just tired of being held at arm’s length while you waste your life on a couple photos!
JAY:
(Through the phone)
What the hell? I put my effort into this- It’s not just ‘a couple photos’.
CUT TO- EXT. DAY. PARK
(Low angle long shot of JAY.)
JAY is now standing by the roundabout, and she looks considerably more agitated. She paces slowly.
CHLOE:
(Through the phone)
JAY-
JAY:
I get I’ve been a bit of an ass and I’m sorry- But you don’t have to be so rude about it.
CHLOE:
(Through the phone)
JAY, I’ve tried everything else- you just ignore me, I can’t deal with this anymore!
CUT TO- EXT. DAY. PARK
(Mid shot from the side of JAY)
JAY:
CHLOE I’m not-
CHLOE hangs up the phone and we hear the call die. JAY lowers the phone and the screen changes back to the camera.
CUT TO- EXT. DAY. PARK
(Long shot of JAY and the roundabout.)
JAY crouches down facing the roundabout and puts her phone in her pocket. JAY begins slowly spinning the roundabout and looks down.
SCENE 4
CUT TO- INT. DUSK. JAY’S ROOM
(Camera straight above JAY- slowly rotates and gets closer to JAY as the take progresses till it is a close up of JAY’s face and the phone)
It is dark and JAY lies curled up on her bed. Her face is lit by the light from her phone. She scrolls through her photos that she has taken. She scrolls onto the photo she accidentally took of CHLOE on the beach. She stares at the photo for a bit before sitting up on the bed. She goes through her phone to CHLOE’s contact and tries to call her. The phone goes immediately to voicemail. **
Jay and Chloe are lying around in Jay’s room silently doing their own thing. Chloe is on the bed is on her phone doom scrolling through reels. Jay is on her laptop// drawing tablet and is doodling photo compositions. The silence isn’t awkward and there is diegetic music playing through a speaker (animal crossing lo-fi). After a while of scrolling Chloe sighs and drops her phone to her side. she sits up and looks at Jay for a few seconds.
CHLOE
Jay?
Jay looks up from her tablet and over to Chloe.
JAY
hmm?
CHLOE
I keep getting food tiktoks and now I'm starving. Are you hungry?
Jay and Chloe look at each other in silence for a second before jay nods her head once.
CUT INT: DAY: JAY’S KITCHEN
the editing is fast paced as the two collect ingredients. Chloe acts like a surgeon asking for their scalpel while Jay finds and hands her all the ingredients and tools she needs.
starts as a shot from the stove the two walk in front and face the wall- they grab a ladle and a spatula from above the camera and bring them into view.
CUT TO- INT. DAY. JAY'S KITCHEN
CUT TO- INT. DAY. JAY'S KITCHEN
CHLOE
chickpeas, cumin, turmeric
JAY
this one?
CHLOE
uh- the chickpeas. your holding sweetcorn...
Jay looks at the tin she is holding, looks back into the cupboard, grabs the chickpeas and puts away the sweetcorn.
CUT TO- INT. DAY. JAY'S KITCHEN
CHLOE
oh- i love this song-
CUT TO- INT. DAY. JAY'S KITCHEN
Chloe and Jay are cutting tomatoes- at this point the song shifts into non diegetic soundtrack and there is no more spoken dialogue
CUT TO- INT. DAY. JAY'S KITCHEN
Chloe and Jay are laughing and joking around as they cook
CUT TO- INT. DUSK. JAY'S ROOM
Jay back in her room, laughing at the photo- the music cuts of abruptly and there's no soundtrack here- just the diegetic sound of Jay laughing and being sad and lonely.
intercutting between cooking and Jay getting up and leaving her room to go to the beach.
CUT TO- EXT. DUSK. BEACH ROAD
(long shot from in front of JAY that dollys back as she runs.)
JAY runs down the road to the beach and looks out of breath.
CUT TO- EXT. DUSK. BEACH
(Long shot from behind JAY)
JAY runs through the hedge barrier and onto the beach. She runs down further onto the beach and looks around. She cant find CHLOE on the beach. JAY runs down to the shoreline and looks to the sunset. She pulls her camera out and take a photo of the sunset.
CUT TO- EXT. DUSK. BEACH
(super long shot with JAY in centre frame)
JAY throws her Phone into the ocean. JAY sits down by the shoreline.
CUT TO- EXT. DUSK. BEACH
(Close up of JAYS shoes and legs in the ocean from JAY’s right side.)
The waves come up and down over JAY’s shoes. JAY’s face is not visible. The credits roll over the shot.
As the credits come to a close someone sits down next to JAY (?????? Good idea or no????)
